Atlético Madrid earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday. Despite a late onslaught by Dortmund, the Spanish side managed to hold on to their narrow lead.
Atlético took control of the game early, with Rodrigo De Paul opening the scoring in the eighth minute. Samuel Lino added a second goal just before halftime, giving Atlético a comfortable advantage.
However, Dortmund came out firing in the second half and pulled one back through Sébastien Haller in the 84th minute. The German side threw everything at Atlético in the closing stages but were unable to find an equalizer.
The result leaves Atlético in a strong position heading into the second leg at Signal Iduna Park on April 12. However, Dortmund will be confident that they can overturn the deficit and secure their place in the semifinals.
In the meantime, both teams will turn their attention back to their domestic leagues. Atlético currently sit third in La Liga, while Dortmund are fourth in the Bundesliga.
