Mbappe double earns France quarterfinal spot
Giroud breaks French goalscoring record
Poland bow out after spirited display
Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe scored the goals as France booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Poland on Sunday.
Giroud gave France the lead in the 44th minute, heading home from close range after good work from Mbappe. Mbappe doubled the advantage in the 74th minute, finishing off a fine move involving Giroud and Ousmane Dembele.
Poland pulled one back through Robert Lewandowski in the 90th minute, but Mbappe sealed the win for France with a stunning solo goal in injury time.
The result sees France advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face England on Saturday.
Poland can be proud of their performance, but they will ultimately be disappointed to have exited the tournament at the last-16 stage.
The match was played in front of a capacity crowd at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
