Emma Raducanu loses in straight sets to Alize Cornet in US Open
Raducanu was the defending champion and seeded 11th
Cornet ranked 150th, won the match in straight sets
Emma Raducanu lost to Alize Cornet in the first round of the US Open in straight sets on Tuesday, ending her defense of the title she won last year. Cornet, ranked 150th in the world, won 6-3, 6-3 in the match.
Raducanu, who entered the tournament as the 11th seed, struggled with her serve throughout the match, committing eight double faults. Cornet, on the other hand, was solid on serve and hit 20 winners to just 12 unforced errors.
The loss is a disappointing result for Raducanu, who was hoping to make a deep run in the tournament. She had been in good form coming into the US Open, having reached the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters last week.
Cornet, meanwhile, has enjoyed a good run of form this season, reaching the semifinals of the WTA tournament in Istanbul in June. She will now face Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic in the second round of the US Open.
